With the inaugural RallyX Americas titles set to be handed out this weekend at Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières, a handful of drivers have only one thing on their mind: securing the series’ inaugural Hypercar title.
Robin Larsson, Tommi Hallman, and Kevin and Oliver Eriksson are separated by just nine points coming into the championship decider. Each has stood on the podium at least once in the previous three races; so evenly matched is the field that only one has been on the podium twice, and so competitive is it that only one has made all three A Finals. And with every driver bringing a different mindset and competitive advantage into the finale, who walks out of Quebec with the championship hardware is truly anyone’s guess.
Larsson has two advantages working for him: he’s the incoming points leader, with 91, and he’s also the only driver to have ever won a championship in the First Corner FC1 Hypercar before. The JC Raceteknik driver kicked off the season with a victory at Crandon, taking with it the Dennis Reinbold One of One Trophy for winning in his first RallyX Americas start—a fitting honor for a driver who won those previous FC1 titles with Reinbold as his co-owner. However, he laments missed opportunities from the other two races to build an even larger lead.
“To win the championship, we’re just gonna do what we’ve done before,” Larsson explains. “Stay calm and push when we need to push, and try to go as high up as possible after the heats! It’s still a bummer that we’ve been taken out of the latest two finals, especially the semifinal in Eldora that cost us a lot of points!”
Second in points with 87 to match his car number, Hallman’s edge is his ability to keep taking podiums. After winning the second Crandon feature in a podium finish, the SET Promotion driver managed to become the only repeat podium finisher among the likely title threats when he scored a second-place finish at Eldora.
“I feel I’m ready for the battle,” he says. “I have good confidence from the previous two events and I see no reason why I wouldn’t be on the pace also there. The goal is clear – to win the first ever RallyX Americas title!”
For Kevin Eriksson, consistency has been the key to getting him here. The Team OMSE driver is the only Hypercar racer to have made all three A Finals so far, and while Hallman beat him to the line in the second Crandon feature, he’s been towards the top of the time sheets for most of the season.
But this weekend? The focus is solely on GP3R. “I’m just going to go there and take it race by race,” he explains. “And try to not to think about the championship, to be honest. If it goes well that’s just a bonus.”
Oliver Eriksson, meanwhile, can say something that none of his title rivals can: he’s already a RallyX champion this year. He just locked up the RallyX North FC2 title two weekends ago at the Estering in Germany, and his dual-title program hasn’t just kept his skills sharp, it’s also earned him a unique spot in series history as one of its only dual title-winners. That has the Team OMSE driver carrying perhaps the most momentum of all into the finale.
“It’s great to be a two-time champ now in RallyX,” he says. “I’m the third one in history to do it, with my brother and Johan Kristoffersson, so it feels good. We had a good year in Europe, and I’m feeling good here in the Americas as well. So we’ll try to keep it up this final weekend with a good result as well, and see how far that takes me. I know I’m not so far off the top here either, and another double would be excellent!”
